All of the patients who come to our wound center are treated with an approach known as integrated simultaneous regenerative medicine. In this approach, each patient receives multiple wound therapies based on a biological analysis of his or her wound tissue. Because chronic wounds typically have an impaired ability to heal, they often fail to respond to the traditional “standard of care.” When treated with a combination of regenerative therapies, however, this impairment can be overcome, enabling the wound to heal. When a new patient comes to the Newark Beth Israel Wound Center, the first step is a comprehensive examination by a multidisciplinary team of physicians.
Our patients often have underlying conditions that are impairing their wound's ability to heal. Treating these conditions is a key part of the wound healing process.
In this important step, our wound physicians surgically remove (debride) any dead, diseased or damaged tissue that may be preventing the wound from healing.
Each patient's wound tissue is also tested for bacterial and fungal infection. We then administer antibiotics and other infection-fighting treatments as needed.
In yet another key step, we administer innovative regenerative therapies to the wound. These stimulate healing by encouraging growth of new tissue.
For selected patients with chronic wounds, treatment in one of Newark Beth Israel’s hyperbaric oxygen chambers can help jump-start the healing process.
In another essential step, Newark Beth Israel scientists analyze tissue samples taken from the patient's wound for biological clues that will guide medical treatment.
Because chronic wounds take time to close, even with the most effective therapies, we also monitor our patients' wounds throughout the healing process.
