Leukine (GM-CSF)

This medication, whose generic name is sargramostim, is an artificial version of granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), a growth factor that stimulates blood vessel formation as well as the growth of human skin cells containing regenerative stem cells, thereby encouraging blood flow and the attendant growth of new skin cells in wound tissue. Our wound-healing team has been involved in original research demonstrating that when diabetic ulcers are treated topically with a sustained-release formulation of GM-CSF—a therapeutic approach for which we currently have a patent pending—the treatment resulted not only in increased keratinocyte migration, fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition, but also promoted proper alignment of collagen, making the collagen more stable and less susceptible to degradation.
